On the morning of April 15, 2023, the Sudanese became on a new reality imposed by very complex circumstances that began in 2019 with the fall of the head of the regime after successive violent demonstrations and sit-ins calling for freedom, peace, and justice, which were quickly aborted by the October 2022 coup and after dramatic conflicts that ended in war between the support forces and the army forces, after which the country entered an unprecedented state of lawlessness and economic and social deterioration. We highlight here some of the effects of the war, as it turns out that it has had a very negative impact on all social, economic, and political levels, leading to a sharp deterioration in the living conditions of citizens and the displacement of millions. These effects include: Social Impact: Large-scale displacement: Military operations have led to the displacement of millions of Sudanese from their homes, causing a severe humanitarian crisis and an increase in the number of displaced people and refugees. • Disintegration of family and society: The war has led to the separation of families and the displacement of children and women, increasing their suffering and exposing them to exploitation and violence. • Widespread fear and anxiety: Sudanese suffer from a state of constant fear and anxiety due to the continued fighting and the deteriorating security situation. • Trauma: Many Sudanese have been traumatized as a result of the violence and destruction in their country. • Deteriorating social services: Basic social services such as health and education have been significantly affected, exacerbating the humanitarian situation. Economic impact: • Collapse of the economy: The conflict has caused the destruction of infrastructure and the disruption of economic activities, leading to high rates of poverty and unemployment. Food and medicine shortages: Sudanese suffer from severe food and medicine shortages due to the disruption of agricultural production and supply chains. • Rising prices: Prices have skyrocketed, which has led to a deterioration in the purchasing power of citizens. • Destruction of infrastructure: roads, bridges, hospitals, and schools have been destroyed, affecting trade, transport, and the delivery of essential services. Political impact: • Deterioration of political stability: The war exacerbated political divisions and deteriorated relations between factions. • State weakness: The central authority of the state has declined, leading to widespread chaos and insecurity. • External interventions: The war has increased external interference in Sudanese affairs, which may complicate the crisis. Implications for the future: Lost generation: The loss of an entire generation of young people to war and displacement could have severe consequences for Sudan’s future. Reconstruction challenges: Sudan will face significant challenges in rebuilding what has been destroyed by the war and will need substantial international support. Impact on the region: The effects of the war may spill over to neighboring countries, affecting regional stability. In conclusion: The war in Sudan is a humanitarian catastrophe, and its effects will continue for many years. The international community must make unremitting efforts for a ceasefire and lasting peace in Sudan.
