First – The stages of Zionist settlement in the Golan (14)(15)(16)(17 )(18):
Immediately after completing its military control over the Golan Heights following the June 1967 war, Israel began working to bring about several geographical and demographic changes in all areas. All over the plateau, it hastened to establish Zionist settlements on the ruins of destroyed Syrian Arab villages, to create material facts on the ground that would prevent their return to Syrian sovereignty on the one hand and serve the expansionist settlement project on the other hand. It also supplied these settlements with several Jewish immigrants it began to bring from different countries.
Among these projects is the revival of settlement plans in the Golan after they had been suspended since 1998. The occupation government announced its intention to raise the number of settlers in the Golan from 20,000 currently to 250,000 by 2030 by establishing dozens of new settlements and expanding existing settlements. We can also mention that elections were imposed for local councils in the occupied Golan for the first time in 2018, which were rejected entirely by the residents of the Golan (less than 1% of the population voted). Obliging residents to register their lands with the Israeli “taboo,” establishing a new, colossal border strip along the ceasefire line, and establishing a further military point west of Majdal Shams.
After Israel achieved one of its most crucial settlement goals in obtaining the largest area of land in exchange for the smallest population, intensive work began in the corridors of the institutions of the occupying state to obliterate the features of the Arab identity of the people of the Golan. So it began imposing its educational curricula on students, and we mention here that the occupying state has three educational curricula: The first is the academic curriculum for Jewish students, then the educational curriculum for Arab students, and finally, the educational curriculum for Druze students. According to Israel’s vision and aspirations, the Druze are not Arabs, and work must be done to separate them from their Arab surroundings in preparation for transforming their religious doctrine into a personal identity that makes them separated from their Arab depth and at the same time They are safe in the embrace of Israel, which began to introduce the idea that it was not hostile to them and that it deliberately refrained from displacing them after stealing the educational curriculum. Israel appointed sectarian religious councils and local councils, whose primary function was implementing the occupation policy, and it controlled the majority of water sources. The villages of the Golan were connected to the Israeli electricity networks, and all economic transactions were transferred to the Israeli currency. In other words, the Israelis worked to cut off possible ties to preserve the people of the Golan in their Arab identity.
