
76percent of UK citizens want ceasefire in Gaza
According to a Middle East Eye report, a poll published by the UK-based public data company YouGov indicates that 76 percent of British adult citizens believe a ceasefire should be implemented between Israel and Gaza’s resistance.
When UK citizens were asked whether there should be an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, 58 percent of the poll respondents said that they “definitely should,” while 18 percent said they “probably should.” Eight percent of respondents objected to the notion of a ceasefire, with only 16 percent claiming that they were not sure.
The poll had been conducted on 19 October, gathering answers from 2,685 respondents.
As of this week, the UK government, under the administration of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak affirmed London’s support for Israel during its ongoing conflict with Gaza during his brief visit to Israel. Additionally, the UK abstained from voting to send humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip during a UN Security Council resolution meeting held on 18 October. Twelve members of the UN voted in favor of the resolution, the UK and Russia abstained, while the US voted against the resolution.
Since the war in Gaza ignited after Hamas launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, western countries immediately flocked to support Israel. However, several EU countries and states across the US have witnessed many protests in support of Palestine.
On 18 October, 300 Jewish protesters were arrested by the US police outside Capitol Hill for protesting in support of an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after Israel continuously bombed the enclave for 13 days.
Despite mass support for Palestine amongst the public, western countries, such as France, the UK, and Germany, have attempted to prevent the continuation of Pro-Palestinian demonstrations to illustrate their solidarity for Israel.
The French police banned two rallies scheduled for 12 October after French Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Morett issued a circular to the courts that showing public support towards the Gaza resistance should be prosecuted for advocating terrorism.
As of now, over 4,000 people have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza since 7 October, with over 12,000 wounded. Israeli officials have openly called for the ethnic cleansing and displacement of the people in Gaza.
